Survival and Phagocytic Effects of CNTF
CNTF, a member of the cytokine family, was originally described as a neuronal survival factor in the chick cilia ganglia. Later on it was found to have trophic effects on different types of neurons. CNTF effects are mediated by a tripartite receptor complex consisting of two signal-transducing subunits (leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR), gp130) and a CNTF-specific ligand-binding-subunit (CNTFRα) anchored to the membrane by a glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI) linkage which lacks the intracellular signaling moiety. It can be cleaved from the GPI anchor to yield an active soluble form of the receptor (sCNTFRα). CNTF binds to CNTFRα, the latter associates with gp130 which recruits LIFR and subsequently leads to the activation of a signaling cascade. This brief paper aims at summarizing the use of Alomone Labs CNTF products in the literature.

pro-Neurotrophins - The other Identity of Neurotrophins
The precursors of neurotrophins – pro-neurotrophins- have proven to be biologically active. This short report aims at pointing out some of their biological functions using Alomone Labs recombinant pro-neurotrophins and antibodies targeted against them.
Off the Trk (with K252a)
The four mammalian neurotrophins (NTs) – NGF, BDNF, NT-3, and NT-4 - are renowned regulators of neural plasticity, function and survival. They differentially activate tropomyosin-related kinase (Trk) receptors: TrkA (binds NGF), TrkB (binds BDNF and NT-4), and TrkC (binds NT-3). NT-3 can also activate TrkA and TrkB, albeit less efficiently. The Trk-NT interaction occurs mainly at the receptor’s most proximal immunoglobulin domain and initiates a kinase cascade. The activity of Trks can be modulated by K252a, which inhibits the phosphorylation of the receptors. In this short synopsis we report the use of Alomone Labs K252a in the literature.
