Ionomycin is a narrow spectrum antibiotic for gram-positive bacteria produced by Streptomyces conglobatus. In mammalian cells, ionomycin acts as a potent and selective Ca2+ ionophore, more effective than A23187. The Ca2+ influx by ionomycin is caused by direct stimulation of store-regulated cation entry and not by direct action at the plasma membrane.1-4
Ionomycin induces hydrolysis of phosphoinositides, activation of PKC in human T cells and apoptosis in various cells lines.5-7
Alomone Labs Ionomycin calcium salt increases [Ca2+]i in mouse sperm.Mouse sperm were incubated under capacitating conditions (CAP) and treated with soluble zona pellucida (sZP), which caused an increase in [Ca2+]i. Administration of Ionomycin calcium salt (#I-700) caused an additional increase in [Ca2+]i.Adapted from Wertheimer, E. et al. (2013) J. Biol. Chem. 288, 35307. with permission of The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biochemistry.
Ionomycin calcium salt (#I-700) is a highly pure, natural, and biologically active compound.
