Galanin is a peptide hormone that acts as a non-selective and potent galanin receptor agonist. Galanin is widely distributed through the central and peripheral nervous system and its biological activity includes contraction or relaxation of gut smooth muscles, inhibition of insulin and somatostatin release, and modulation of hormone secretion from the pituitary and adrenal glands. It is believed that galanin plays an important role as a neuromodulator of endocrine secretion and synaptic transmission1.
